DAVID & DAVETTE

2010

Sint-Denijs-Westrem, Belgium

Standing tall at a remarkable height of 12 meters, the massive sculptures of project 'IMBER' serve as iconic landmarks, illuminating their surroundings with their presence. These monumental statues pay homage to Michelangelo's renowned masterpiece, David. However, Piet Van's artistic vision takes a unique twist, as he crafts these statues using a combination of traditional and innovative techniques.

The process begins with carving the statues from marble, faithfully capturing the essence of the original work. Then, employing newly developed methods, Piet Van enlarges and refines the sculptures, employing intricate techniques such as assembling brown clay stones in pixel-like formations. With painstaking precision, the statue is meticulously cut and shaped, ensuring its flawless form.

What makes this endeavor even more extraordinary is that Piet Van undertook the monumental task of sculpting these statues single-handedly, dedicating an entire year to their creation. This commitment and artistic craftsmanship shine through in the final result, captivating viewers with the grandeur and beauty of these imposing sculptures.

Through 'IMBER,' Piet Van invites us to appreciate the fusion of classical inspiration and innovative techniques, as he reinterprets a timeless masterpiece, infusing it with his own artistic flair. The towering presence of these sculptures serves as a testament to the artist's unwavering dedication and creative vision.
